Happy New Year!

It’s the time again to get wasted and kissing each other passionately on 0:00, so that’s exactly what the RandomBase people are going to do (well, the kissing each other part might be left out if we happen to celebrate in the same room). Have a great time and see you again in a couple of days!

dencoder.com – de/encoding online

Not the community I talked about earlier, but this is a project that has been in my head for a while. When experimenting with programming stuff I often need to write little scripts to perform a simple encoding of text to say base64 or decode it. This is pretty time consuming, so I put my idea on paper and made dencoder.com.

Dencoder has a whole lot of algorithms, but also a lot of PHP functions such as urlencode() and escapemeta(). I’ve also added simple things as count characters and words. I did my best to make it as convenient as possible, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Death of a dinosaur

BFHforum.net, our oldest and “most successful” forum, has been shut down today. The final message is in Dutch, but the gist of it is: we’re deeply disappointed in the game Battlefield Heroes.

There are plans however on starting an entire new community on an entirely different game in English this time. You’ll read more about this as soon as our designer gets out of rehab.

Edit: you can express your condolences in this thread on the official Battlefield Heroes forum (thanks to HarmH), and maybe even let DICE rethink some of their decisions that completely screwed over their fans.

Happy holidays!

It’s the nicest time of the year again: holiday season! Gifts, warmth, friendship, what more do you need? We wish a merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family, friends, loved ones, neighbors, …

We would also like to applaud Google for their incredible holiday action this year, giving away $ 20 000 000 can’t be easy in this recession.

Faster server

A lot of our users complained about the slowness of our websites on this server, so we investigated and found some issues and some fixes. I’ve also installed a PHP optimizer (eAccelerator) so in general everything should be faster.

If you still have any complaints or questions, please leave them in the comments or e-mail me (iron@randombase blah blah).

Three little scripts

For your enjoyment, three scripts I have made in the past but were kind of lost in the stream of blog posts on my old personal website. So, let’s start with:

Random Colour Scheme Generator

What is there to say? This extremely simple tool picks five completely random colours and shows them to you, if there is something you like, push the button below and you’ll have their HTML (HEX) codes.

Javascript Contrast Reader

The source is more interesting than using it, this little tool shows you how the foreground colour of your text affects the readability of your text.

Acronym Solver

Solver is quite a lie here, it just guesses what your acronym could stand for, example:

RandomBase: rifle arrow notices drift over magnitude bake atmosphere snake eleven

You get the idea.

I have a lot more of these little scripts; I’ll be publishing them again later.

PHP Rewrite

This one is pretty old already, PHP Rewrite.

PHP Rewrite offers you some of the basic functionality of Apache’s mod_rewrite, making your URL’s a whole lot nicer and more search engine friendly (which has become increasingly important for the success of your website).

There is one major downside though and that’s the fact it doesn’t support POST requests sent to the rewritten URL as it works with a 404 error page. If you ever find a way around this, let me know, I’d be greatly interested in seeing someone bypass this restriction.

Introducing Ascizer

Ascizer (ya know, ASCII-izer, it sounded a whole lot better at 4 AM) is a simple website that allows you to convert any image into a bunch of weird characters.

The idea came from the ASCII’s that are being posted on Digg from time to time, they are often very nice and I tried to create my own tool to convert images to this type of “art”. A lot of programming and thinking later, Ascizer was born. It works best on simple images with a clear distinction of the object(s), so don’t try to convert your family photographs, but try things like a picture of your dog or a drawing.

Click here if you missed the two links to Ascizer in the text above me.

Getting things working…

Hey everyone – been quite a long time.

The website isn’t finished at the moment but I’ve decided to put it online for everyone, so you can all see there is still someone here… If you have absolutely no idea who or what this place is – check the freshly written About page.

I’ll do my best to get as many projects and downloads online again so there is actually something to see here. Hang on…
